About St Valentine’s day and…

the right to Truly Love

 

Gone are the days when St Valentine’s day was just an American tradition in which people exchanged love letters, cards and secret messages, basking in the fun and excitement of a simple exchange of loving feelings expressed in creative ways not harnessed by mass consumption.

It saddens me that a day is needed for people to show each other how much they care for their spouses, girlfriends or boyfriends or prospective heart throbs. That buying expensive gifts… or buying anything at all is regarded as a sign of the extent of one’s love. Why would anyone want to go out for dinner on a day where everyone else is pre-programmed to go out for dinner anyway? All restaurants are full, one has to wait more than usual to be served and dishes are usually also more expensive on St Valentine’s day.

So I praise the freedom of being able to love every day, to value gifts any time and to cherish the company of my sweetheart more than anything money could buy, laced with each special moment, be it winter, summer, spring or fall.

Just a reminder of how the consumer society we are part of tends to get hold of everything, even love, in order to manipulate us into buying more when in fact showing and being more would suffice.
